DEFENSE INNOVATION UNIT

The Defense Innovation Unit represents a critical evolution in the Department of Defense's approach to commercial technology adoption, transitioning from experimental prototype development to strategic-scale implementation. Under Doug Beck's leadership since April 2023, DIU has undergone significant organizational realignment, now reporting directly to the Secretary of Defense rather than the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. This structural change reflects DIU's elevated role in addressing the most critical capability gaps facing U.S. military forces.
